1988-1998 OBS Chevy/GMC Molding & Weatherstrip Guide

Restoring your OBS Chevrolet or GMC truck involves countless parts that need refreshing or replacement. Exterior lighting, interior trim, wheels, and engine components are all pieces of the puzzle. One of the most commonly overlooked areas is OBS weatherstrip. The seals found throughout the cab and body of your truck age which results in the soft rubber dry rotting and becoming brittle which allows exterior elements to enter places they shouldn't.

Luckily, Truck Resto has all the 1988-1998 OBS Chevrolet and GMC truck weatherstrip and molding you need to ensure your cab stays nice and comfortable. We've put together this OBS weatherstrip guide so you can identify which pieces you need with helpful illustrations that point out where on the truck each piece is located.

We'll start with the outside of the truck and what's immediately exposed to rain, wind, UV rays, and other elements. In the illustration above, you'll see the door glass run channel and outer door belt moldings are highlighted.

OBS Chevy/GMC Truck Outer Door Belt Moldings

Located on the outside of the door where your window rolls up, these moldings are also referred to as a dew wipe as they wipe the glass as it rolls down. Over time, these moldings dry out and start to crack. One side has a soft felt lining, the other a hard molding. They simply press onto the door flange for a quick and easy installation. Some trucks came from the factory with a clip on style attachment so take a look at yours before ordering.

OBS Chevy/GMC Truck Door Glass Run Channel Weatherstrip

Next in the illustration above is the door glass run channel weatherstrip. This is the rubber that your window rolls up into. Running from inside the front of the door, around the frame, and then down into the back of the door; this piece is critical to sealing your window.

Moving to the inside of the cab, there are several pieces that ensure the door to cab seal is tight. The door glass run channel weatherstrip pictured is the same one covered in the last paragraph.

OBS Chevy/GMC Truck Door to Body Weatherstrip

Your door to body weatherstrip is just as it sounds. It seals the door to the body. This weatherstrip wraps all the way around the frame of the door so that when you close it you have a 100% seal. Made with thick, durable rubber; this piece can take the daily abuse it of opening and closing doors constantly. It simply presses onto the pinchweld for an easy installation.

88-98 OBS Chevy/GMC Truck Hood to Cowl Seal

Finally, we wrap this guide up under the hood. A commonly ignored piece is your hood to cowl seal. This seal is at the top of your firewall, right in front of the cowl vent grille. It helps prevent moisture, leaves, and other dirt and debris from entering your engine bay. It simply presses on to the pinchweld for a quick and easy installation.
